I have a partial answer. You must put the exact domain name specified in the certificate in the fields for POP/IMAP/SMTP server.

Now I don't see this dialog on my laptop. Sorry for the vague answer but I really don't know what I did, but I was trying lots of stuff.

I'd love to find the elusive answer to this too. Ever since my upgrade to Leopard, I now have sporadic email access. Previously, on Tiger, you could just say "Continue" (anyway) and it would go through and not bother you until you reloaded Mail.app, but now in Leopard, I'll sometimes get the "Cannot send message using the server...." because of the "The certificate for this server is invalid." I've even imported the certificates into my Keychain and explicitly told the system to "Always Trust", but somehow that just isn't enough. Ugh. If I ever find an answer, I'll let ya know :)
