General Surgery in NY

So here I am in NYC at the American Society of General Surgeons clinical meeting. The program is correctly termed controversies as I’m quite certain many of the described treatment paths would cause you to fail your oral boards.

Of note is that it seems that most of the attendees have been in practice for over 10 years. The lecturers are mostly all teaching faculty at the local ivory tower and they seem to use less invasive treatment and laparoscopy far more than I would.

For example, laparoscopic closure of diverticular perforation with irrigation and drainage but no resection. Not sure I would ever do this open so I can’t see why it’s an acceptable treatment plan laparoscopically. Maybe I’m just old fashioned.

Importing Mail Message Attachments into Aperture

So I’ve just gotten my new Unibody MacBook and Aperture. Immediately I find myself wanting for a Quick Look > Add to Aperture just like there is for iPhoto. Unfortunately it’s nowhere to be found. Fortunately Aperture is scriptable.

Version 1.0 of SaveAttachments2Aperture is now available. It’s currently very simple with little error checking. It works multiple attachments per message and imports all attachments of a selected message into a new Aperture project.

It could be used in a Mail rule though I prefer to select it manually from the Script menu. I have it saved in ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/Mail/.

A thanks goes out to Automating Aperture where I got some of the Aperture scripting.

Comments welcome.

Update Now at version 1.1. I added some simple logic to only import certain file types. You might need to add to this list. If I’m missing some let me know, especially with Raw images.

v1.2 - add a bunch of the usual camera raw file types

Election Postmortem

Barack Obama is the POTUS-Elect. Congrats. I’m so glad it was decisive and isn’t going to have lawyers involved. I have to say I called this in November, 2007 and wrote about Obama four years ago. I wish him all the best our country needs it’s best and brightest working together.

Prop. 8 in my home state of California hasn’t yet been decided officially but with 95% of the precincts reporting it is passing by 4%. Personally, I’m glad the citizens got to vote this issue and the legality isn’t going to be decided by a 4 judges who disagreed with a similar ballot measure from 2000 that passed with about 61% of the vote.

Back to your regular unscheduled programming.

OK, I have serious laptop envy. I need a new MacBook. Just have to figure out what to do about no firewire drive.

Washington Priorities

The current financial meltdown is the news of the day and the politicos in Washington are trying to fix/solve the problem.

Why is it then that the solution is 400+ pages long and contains crap like money for wooden arrow makers and wool studies?

Is Washington so riddled with ADD that they can’t keep their eye on the ball and produce legislation that does only ONE thing?

McCain Campain on Hold??

This is joke right? Who advises these people.

On the other hand, my congratulations go out to President Obama.

Addendum:
This political stunt only works for McCain if he blows up any existing plan supported by the Dems (done) and his proposed plan gets instituted and actually works.

Side note:
The Dems could, in theory, pass whatever plan they want without Republican support, GWB already said he’d sign it.

Whining

Security experts say that Apple isn’t ready for enterprise prime-time.

Quit whining. All you seem to care about is that Apple didn’t give you any advance notice. You spent the entire article about it without even addressing the fixes or whether OS X and/or QuickTime, etc. are now more secure. Grow up. Apple doesn’t need to have a press conference to tell you they’re working on security.

Powered Down

The power was off for most of the day a couple of days ago. Perhaps related or not but now our G5 iMac won’t power on.

Off to the closest Apple Authorized Service Center.

Biden VEEP??

Joe Biden the 6-term Senator from Delware is Obama’s choice for VEEP. I’m wondering how this old guard Washington insider adds to Obama’s message of change.

Personally I think Bill Richardson would have been a better choice. Adds the foreign policy cred without all of Biden’s baggage.
