Dr Fragen in the operating room

So you really want to take ER call?

[Surgeon held over patient’s death][1] from the BBC.
So let me get this straight. Some guy stabs himself in the chest and later dies and they want to blame the surgeon? What, was he *supposed* to leave the knife sticking out of the guy?
Been there, done that. You always worry that when you pull out the knife, iron bar, tree branch, whatever, that you would release something that is being tamponaded and the patient crashes suddenly. It’s a risk. That’s why most commonly the removal is done in the OR.
But give me a break, the surgeon didn’t stab the guy to begin with. Doesn’t anyone have to take responsibility for their actions?
